Summary

  • Scott Lynch’s upcoming novellas will keep fans satisfied while waiting for the next book in the
    Gentleman Bastard
    series.
  • The novellas will focus more on character development and relationships, but they’ll still have their usual action-packed storylines.
  • Lynch’s new stories will offer context for
    The Thorn of Emberlain
and build anticipation for the upcoming sequel.

I’ve been waiting for the next book in the Gentleman Bastard series for years, and Scott Lynch’s latest update is reigniting my excitement for The Thorn of Emberlain. The Republic of Thieves hit shelves back in 2013, and that’s the last readers saw of Locke Lamora and Jean Tanner. Lynch confirmed another book in the Gentleman Bastard sequence, but it’s taking The Thorn of Emberlain a while to become a reality. Waits are expected with lengthy fantasy series, but this doesn’t make them any less agonizing. Fortunately, the author has good news for readers eager to return to his world.

While attending the World Science Fiction Convention in Glasgow, Scotland, Lynch shared an update on his Gentleman Bastard series (via scottlynch.us). The author revealed that he’ll be releasing three novellas ahead of The Thorn of Emberlain — and it sounds like they’re fairly fleshed out already. While these novellas won’t be necessary to read before the next Gentleman Bastard book, they do give readers something new to look forward to. By announcing them, Lynch has certainly revived my interest in the upcoming installment.

Scott Lynch’s Gentleman Bastard Novellas Are Reigniting My Excitement For The Next Book

They’ll Tide Us Over Until The Thorn Of Emberlain

After 11 years without new Gentleman Bastard content, Lynch’s novellas are an extremely exciting prospect. Although The Road to Emberlain novellas aren’t necessary reads for those keeping up with the series, they are something to tide us over until The Thorn of Emberlain. They can reimmerse readers in Lynch’s fantasy world, and this will surely increase the anticipation for his upcoming sequel. With the lengthy gap between The Republic of Thieves and The Thorn of Emberlain, I could use a reminder of why I loved this series so much in the first place. These sound like they’ll do the trick.

The fact that Lynch is writing novellas as lead-ins to The Thorn of Emberlain also means he’s actively working on and thinking about the next installment. The fourth Gentleman Bastard book doesn’t have a release date just yet, but we can rest assured that it’s still in the works. Anyone who’d lost hope of returning to this world can now look forward to multiple new stories, all of which will feature the characters and settings they’ve come to love. Judging by the way Lynch describes his Road to Emberlain novellas, they’ll be the perfect lead-ins to the fourth Gentleman Bastard book. Lynch confirmed that each one will be around 40,000 words and that they’ll offer the chance for “a bit of a leg-stretch and some halting to smell the roses.” That doesn’t happen often in these stories, but it sounds like the Gentleman Bastard novellas will focus more heavily on the characters and their relationships to each other and the world around them. They’ll also provide context for why Locke and Jean head to Emberlain in book four.

Those who enjoy the action-packed, scheming storylines of
The Lies of Locke Lamora
and its sequels can also expect some of that from Lynch’s novellas.

Those who enjoy the action-packed, scheming storylines of The Lies of Locke Lamora and its sequels can also expect some of that from Lynch’s novellas. While they won’t drastically alter the plot of the main series, the author did promise “swearing, desperate schemes, and fast-paced bloodshed.” Overall, it sounds like The Road to Emberlain will offer the best of both worlds. There’s no better way to prepare us for the next book in the series, and I can’t wait to see what Locke and Jean get up to in the year before The Thorn of Emberlain.

Although the wait for Lynch’s next Gentleman Bastard book is still a lengthy one, getting more three more stories makes up for it. While most of us believed we were getting one book in the near future, we’re now met with the pleasant surprise that numerous releases are on the horizon. I’m much less frustrated with the 11-year gap between books knowing that there’s a lot planned for this series in the coming years. With any luck, The Road to Emberlain and The Thorn of Emberlain will prove worth the wait.

Of course, it’s possible the Gentleman Bastard novellas will delay the fourth book, as it sounds like they’re being released prior to The Thorn of Emberlain. Even still, I’m happy to dive into any story that continues Locke and Jean’s arcs after The Republic of Thieves. I missed the Gentleman Bastard series, and I’m happy we’re getting so many more additions to it.
