Section 31’s Future Beyond 2025 Star Trek Movie Gets Enthusiastic Response From Director: “There’s A Million Stories”

Star Trek: Section 31 director Olatunde Osunsanmi has offered an enthusiastic response to the movie’s future after 2025 while speaking about it at New York Comic Con. The upcoming Star Trek: Section 31 follows Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) from Star Trek: Discovery, who joins the titular secretive Starfleet division in order to protect the United Federation of Planets. The TV movie is the first of its kind for the franchise, while also being the first full-length movie in the sci-fi series since 2016’s Star Trek: Beyond. It will arrive on Paramount+ on January 24, 2025.

Speaking with Screen Rant at New York Comic Con, Osunsanmi gave an enthusiastic response to the future of Star Trek: Section 31 after 2025, indicating more stories could branch off the TV film depending on its reception. The director praises writer Craig Sweeney and executive producer Alex Kurtzman for their vision of the movie, and how it fits into the wider lore of the franchise. He says there are plenty of directions the series could go after the film, meaning it likely won’t be the last time Philippa appears. Check out what Osunsanmi had to say below:

The wonderful thing about what Craig did with this growth, and the wonderful, wonderful thing about what Alex does with this iteration of Star Trek that he’s shepherded through is each series, and now this movie, is so unbelievably layered with character, with the worlds. So, if the audience loves it as much as we love it, and I’m really excited for ’em to see it, there is a wonderful potential to go on. Yeah, there’s a million stories that could be birthed from Section 31, so hope you love it.

What Osunsanmi’s Statement Means For Stark Trek After Section 31

A Continued Focus On Philippa Seems Very Possible

While there have only been a few details revealed about the upcoming movie, it’s clear the former leader of the Mirror Universe’s Terran Empire is ready to begin a new life after the events of Discovery. Out of every upcoming Star Trek movie and TV show, Section 31 remains the most mysterious despite its close release date, as it’s unclear what missions Philippa will be tasked with. Even so, Osunsanmi’s statement indicates her appearance could usher the franchise into its next chapter, with more stories featuring her in the future.
