Simpsons Season 36 Image Confirms The Return Of A Deceased Character From 8x Oscar Nominated Actor

A new image from The Simpsons season 36 has confirmed the latest return of a deceased character, portrayed by an eight-time Oscar-nominated actor. The Simpsons guest star characters have included a rather large roster over the course of its run, from Winona Ryder as Allison Tyler, to Willem Dafoe as The Commandant. Celebrities have also voiced themselves across the franchise, like Tom Hank and Conan O’Brien, while others have portrayed recurring characters, like Danny DeVito as Herb Powell, who has shown up in multiple seasons of the animated comedy.

Now, executive producer and writer Al Jean has shared an image from The Simpsons season 36, episode 12, “The Man Who Flew Too Much,” featuring hints about what to expect from the episode. His post confirms an appearance from the ghost of Mona Simpson, Homer’s deceased mother, voiced by Oscar-nominated actor Glenn Close. The upcoming episode marks the character’s first time onscreen since season 33, episode 9, which aired on November 28, 2021, and where Close had previously reprised her role. What Mona Simpson’s Return Means For Season 36, Episode 12

How Big A Role Will She Have?

Mona Simpson’s appearances began with season 2, episode 15, “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” where she was not yet voiced by the Oscar-nominated star. She later provided her voice in season 7, episode 8, “Mother Simpson,” where Homer reunites with her after believing her to have died decades earlier. However, in season 19, episode 19, “Mona Leaves-a,” she does die, making the protagonist feel guilty about not having reconciled with her before. Since then, she’s appeared in flashbacks, still voiced by Close, throughout different episodes of the show.

The major focus of The Simpsons season 36, episode 12 will be on the Pin Pals, also pictured, going to Capital City for their first bowling championship. Since Homer is the leading member of their team, whatever happens at the tournament could potentially prompt divine intervention from his mother. Mona’s appearance might also be an illusory vision he has, perhaps during a crucial moment that requires his focus in order to win an important round. Either way, Mona’s return seems like it will be directly connected to whatever the team faces at their tournament.

Our Take On Mona Simpson’s Return In Season 36

She’s Still A Recurring Character Despite Her Death

Abe meets Mona

Mona’s return shows how, despite her death many seasons ago, the character still holds a strong place in the series as a memorable guest returnee. With Close coming back to the role once again, it’s clear she is the only actor who can truly bring Homer’s mother to life across her many appearances throughout the show’s history. With the episode likely to be memorable for her return, it seems The Simpsons season 36 still knows how to bring compelling stories and characters to the forefront.
