McDonald’s isn’t somewhere you’d expect to find Rishi Sunak eating at on the reg, but it turns out the Prime Minister is a big fan of one particular item.

Back in 2022 he revealed the Breakfast Wrap is his go-to order from the fast food chain, which caused a bit of controversy.

This is because the wrap hadn’t actually been on the menu for two years at that point. Awkward…

However, it returned to the menu once more in February this year, and it was a pretty big deal at the time. People went wild for the £4.39 wrap, prompting an egg shortage just two days after it launched.

But it seems Rishi might have missed the memo on the wrap once again, as he’s only just shared news of its comeback online.

The Conservative Party leader took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a snap of himself holding a Breakfast Wrap, writing: ‘I love a comeback.’

While Rishi might be a big fan of the wrap, not all McDonald’s customers are convinced by his favourite brekkie and have made their thoughts clear on social media.

One controversial post on X by @chxrliedore read: ‘Breakfast Wrap overrated af. Breakfast Roll — put the hash brown inside, reigns supreme.’

@jaystyler_ agreed, simply writing: ‘McDonald’s breakfast wrap is overrated.’ And @_Hazpilicueta added: ‘Breakfast wrap is without a doubt the most overrated thing I’ve ever tasted.’

Personally, I’ve always been a Sausage, Egg and Cheese McMuffin kind of gal, but I have to admit when I saw the debate around these items, I knew I had to find out once and for all which Maccies breakfast is suprerior.

I absolutely LOVE a wrap and breakfast is my favourite meal of the day, so in theory the Breakfast Wrap should have been an instant winner for me.

However, I think this might be one of those rare occasions when I think the general consensus (and Rishi Sunak) is just plain wrong.

Now, I don’t want to give you the wrong idea, the wrap IS good. In fact it’s very tasty. After all, it’s hard to go wrong with sausage, bacon, eggs, cheese, and a potato rosti all wrapped up in carbs.

But there’s something about these ingredients put together inside a tortilla wrap that just feels wrong to me. I’d usually eat a wrap for lunch or dinner. (Yes, I know breakfast burritos are a thing… but I said what I said.)

In my experience the wrap went a little mushy as I ate, and that paired with the texture of the eggs just wasn’t the best combo. And as there’s not one but two eggs, after a few bites, this just felt a bit like an egg wrap – and who really wants that?

As a hangover cure, I’m sure it’s a dream, but I have to say for everyday consumption, the Breakfast roll with added hash brown is by far the superior choice.

I know it’s pricier as you’ve got to order a side of hash brown too (£4.09 for roll plus £1.99), but my god is it worth it.

Once you’ve added your deep fried potato goodness into the mix, the roll is everything you could possibly want a McDonald’s breakfast to be.

To start with, there’s more crispy golden potato to go around as the standard hash browns are much bigger than the rectangular potato rosti you get in the wrap.

There’s also a better ratio of filling in each bite with the roll. You get the perfect amount of each ingredient in every mouthful. Whereas it’s a bit more random with the wrap.

Another benefit is that with the sausage patty inside a roll, it’s like eating a burger for breakfast. But unlike regular Maccie’s burgers, the bun here is a soft white roll, the kind you’d want for a bacon butty. Not a sesame seed in sight!

Honestly, the only issue I have with the roll is that it doesn’t already come with a hash brown inside.

Sorry Rishi, but @chxrliedore is right, it is overrated. The Breakfast Roll does reign supreme, and we’re not the only ones who think so.

Fellow Metro.co.uk lifestyle reporter Gregory Robinson also tried both the wrap and roll and thought the roll was superior. But he does claim another breakfast item is his fave.

He said: ‘The bread used for the Breakfast Roll feels a lot more filling than the wrap, which is still a nice option. However the ultimate breakfast choice at Maccies will always be the Bagel.’

And on social media, the roll also has a bit of a cult following.

@SirJamAsh posted on X: ‘Breakfast Roll is top tier beats the wrap lol.’

@_fvckouttahere said: ‘If you go to McDonald’s and get a Breakfast Roll with hash brown an put the hash brown in the roll you’re elite.’

@ItsHannio wrote: ‘I’m sorry but unless you’re a McDonald’s Breakfast Roll I literally do not care about u.’

And Hannah Cooper added: ‘Oh hello @McDonalds Breakfast Roll (no cheese) with brown sauce. You are my new fave.’

Some even thought it was better than the legendary McMuffin, as @SophieLauren11 posted: ‘I hate to say it but McDonald’s Breakfast Roll > McMuffin.’

I’m not sure I’d go quite that far as McMuffins will always be god tier, but if there’s one thing that we’ve learned from all this, it’s that there’s nothing that Brits feel stronger about than the McDonald’s breakfast menu.
