Spain have won Euro 2024 after Mikel Oyarzabal’s last-gasp goal sealed a 2-1 victory over England in the final.

After a first half which lacked quality, Nico Williams put Spain in front shortly after the restart with his fine finish in the 47th minute.

Cole Palmer, who came on as a substitute, pulled England level with another brilliant effort with 17 minutes remaining.

But Spain sealed a deserved 2-1 win after Oyarzabal got on the end of Marc Cucurella’s cross and finished from close range past Jordan Pickford.

Television replays showed that the offside call was extremely tight, and viewers in the UK were left stunned as they were not immediately shown a replay of the semi-automated decision.

However, shortly before the full-time whistle, ITV revealed how close the offside decision was.

It turned out that as Cucurella played the cross, John Stones’ knee was just in front of the Spain forward, keeping him in an onside position.

England were given four minutes of added time to find an equaliser but were unable to score another.

Gareth Southgate’s side are now the first team in the history of the European Championship to lose in two consecutive finals.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, England captain Harry Kane said: ‘It’s an opportunity missed.

‘It’s disappointing we couldn’t win it for him [Southgate].’
