Speed 3 receives a hopeful update from stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. The 1994 action thriller stars Reeves and Bullock as an LAPD officer and passenger who must prevent an explosive-rigged bus from detonating by keeping its speed above 50 miles per hour. Reeves opted not to return alongside Bullock for 1997’s Speed 2: Cruise Control, though in recent years, there has been a lot of discussion from Reeves, Bullock, and director Jan de Bont about a possible third film.
During a joint appearance on the 50 MPH podcast, which recounts the making of the original movie, Reeves and Bullock shared a hopeful update on Speed 3. The actor is confident that he and Bullock can pull it off, saying “We’d freakin’ knock it out of the park.” Acknowledging their onscreen chemistry, the actress also expressed interest in working with Reeves again. Read their full comments below:
Reeves
: I mean, you know — we’d freakin’ knock it out of the park.Bullock
: There’s no formula. It just is. Before I die, before I leave this planet, I do think that Keanu and I need to do something in front of the camera. Are we, you know, in wheelchairs or with walkers? Maybe. Are we on little scooters at Disneyland?”Reeves
: It does feel like there is a siren call to it, like there’s something that wasn’t done. I would love to work with you again before our eyes close.
Is Speed 3 Finally Happening?
There has been much discussion about Speed 3 in recent years, though based on Reeves and Bullock’s recent comments, it sounds like it could finally be close to happening. The original Speed was a massive critical and commercial success, largely because of the crackling chemistry between stars Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, solidifying them as leading stars. However, Reeves opted not to return alongside Bullock for 1997’s Speed 2: Cruise Control, which was a critical and commercial flop that is widely regarded as one of the worst sequels ever made.

Speed 2 Would Have Sucked With Or Without Keanu Reeves
Although the popular actor passed on the role, Speed 2 was beset by so many problems that Keanu Reeves’ presence wouldn’t have made a difference.
Reeves declined to return for Speed 2 due to issues involving the script. In turn, it’s understandable why, in March 2023, the star said he would only return for Speed 3 on one condition – “a great story, a great script.” The original Speed was written by Graham Yost with uncredited rewrites from Joss Whedon, though the sequel was penned by Randall McCormick and Jeff Nathanson. It’s unclear who would be commissioned to write a potential third film.
In November 2020, director Jan de Bont said, similar to Reeves’ stance, he would return for Speed 3 depending on the quality of the script and the availability of the cast. Based on Reeves and Bullock’s recent comments, it sounds like they are both willing to return for Speed 3, leaving the script as the only uncertainty remaining. It’s unclear if a potential threequel would bring back Graham Yost or find a new writer, but with Reeves and Bullock both on board, all Speed 3 needs is a well-written script before it can finally happen.
Speed
is streaming on STARZ.
