William Shatner has left people bewildered after the Star Trek actor revealed he’s recently celebrated his 93rd birthday.
The Canadian actor has had a career spanning seven decades but is best known for his portrayal of James T. Kirk in the Star Trek franchise.
He made his debut as the captain of the starship Enterprise in the second pilot of the first Star Trek television series in 1966, with his last in the movie Star Trek Generations in 1994.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week, William floored fans when speaking how he was a nonagenarian.
After the talk show host wished him a Happy Birthday and a cake covered in candles was delivered to him, the actor joked: ‘When you’re 93 and people start clapping, you get a little bit suspicious.’
‘But if they could see my new movie and then applaud, that would be nice,’ he added.
Speaking about the new movie, William Shatner: You Can Call Me Bill, the host then asked the actor if he could impart any wisdom he’d picked up over the past nine decades.
‘That’s the thing. If you are a dumb young person and you don’t do anything about it you become a dumb old person,’ he quipped.
‘I mean just because you’re 93 years old who deserves applause? I’m 93 years old. That doesn’t work. But I’m born and a new life comes in? That deserves applause.’
However, many viewers did express their awe at William reaching the milestone.
‘Bro really took “live long and prosper” to heart,’ user sjshark408 commented on the show’s YouTube clip of the interview.
‘He looks and sounds like someone 30 years younger,’ drumwrkshp shared.
‘Being 93 years old officially makes him a time traveller,’ saidnimr959 said.
Another, gm9162 added: ‘William Shatner is absolutely an amazing man. 93 years old but still is so active. He is truly blessed. Rock on Captain Kirk.’
Addressing the applause comments, AFT3RDAY5, wrote: ‘He deserves all the applause in the world. Not because he is 93 but because of his achievements and for being the awesome human being he is.’
Several others said they wished they still had the same level of energy if they reached the same age, while many others couldn’t quote believe how old he was and instead thought he was two decades younger.
Since Star Trek, William has appeared in Rock from the Sun, Boston Legal and Never Late Than Never.
In 2021 aged 90, he flew into space aboard a Blue Origin sub-orbital capsule, becoming the oldest person to fly in space.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs on ABC in the United States.
