A portion of Jango Fett’s Legends-era characterization is being returned to the modern Star Wars canon via a surprising retcon. Jango Fett’s history in the original Star Wars Legends continuity was straightforward, with Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones bringing Fett into the realm of live-action and explaining his role (and demise) in the main saga. Non-movie material expanded Jango Fett’s backstory and characterization even further, but this would be altered by the Star Wars franchise’s partial reboot in 2014.

In his original Legends incarnation, Jango Fett was a Mandalorian and a veteran of the Mandalorian Civil War, having lost his family and mentor to the Death Watch terrorist group. 2008’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars and subsequent materials in the modern Star Wars canon reestablished Fett as a common bounty hunter who used Mandalorian gear, however. More recent properties in the modern canon would retcon significant portions of Fett’s Legends-era lore back into the modern timeline, making Jango a true Mandalorian once again, but an upcoming sourcebook will bring another part of his Legends-era characterization into the modern canon.

Star Wars Brings Back Jango Fett’s Legends Backstory

Jango Was More Involved With The Clone Army’s Training Than Previously Insinuated

Jango Fett had a fundamentally different perception of his clone troopers in the Legends continuity. Jango only raised one clone – Boba Fett – as a son, but he saw the entire Clone Army collectively as his legacy. For this, Jango Fett went to great lengths to ensure that every clone of every rank and specialization was a genuine Mandalorian by culture on at least a basic level. Fett oversaw the training of all clones and employed the Cuy’val Dar – an elite group of Mandalorians– for assistance, with the latter personally training Clone Commandos and Fett training all Alpha-class ARC Troopers himself.

The modern Star Wars canon will bring this element of Jango Fett’s Legends-era characterization back, thanks to the upcoming sourcebook Star Wars: The Secrets of the Clone Troopers, by Marc Sumerak. The book, which is written from the perspective of Captain Rex, reveals that Jango Fett oversaw clone trooper training programs, making him far more involved in the development of the Clone Army than previous modern canon materials implied. This retcon further improves Jango Fett’s modern canon incarnation and further aligns the franchise with the recent Disney+ TV shows.

The 2019 one-shot comic Age of Republic – Jango Fett, by Jody Houser and Luke Ross, portrayed Jango Fett according to what the modern Star Wars canon had established at the time. Fett is shown to be apathetic to the Clone Army, seeing his status as the Prime Clone as nothing more than a simple job. With Fett having had his Mandalorian background reestablished, however, The Secrets of the Clone Troopers’ retcon further improves his characterization, making him more involved in clone trooper training like his original Star Wars Legends incarnation.
