  • In the comics, Steve Lombard works as a sports reporter for the Daily Planet, making him a coworker to Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

James Gunn’s Superman movie cast has landed another actor in the role of one of the Daily Planet staff workers in the DC Universe reboot. After the slate was initially announced in January 2023, DC Studios is getting several of their Chapter 1 movies and TV shows off the ground, as Gunn’s DC Universe is on its way. The upcoming Superman movie will be the first film from DC Studios, and it will help lay the foundation for the DC Universe franchise.

With the Superman movie less than two months away from finishing principal photography, Gunn announced that Beck Bennett has joined the cast as the DC character Steve Lombard. Check out Gunn’s full post below.

Bennett’s casting was first hinted at when he was spotted in a recent Superman cast photo, with fans starting to speculate that he was perhaps in the film. This will be the second live-action incarnation of Steve, as he previously appeared in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in 2013, played by Michael Kelly.

Who Is Steve Lombard And How He Fits Into Superman’s Story

Created by Cary Bates and Curt Swan, Steve Lombard made his first DC Comics appearance in Superman #264 in June 1973. In DC lore, Steve was a former football star, having played as a quarterback, before entering the world of journalism. In most incarnations, Steve is a sports reporter for the Daily Planet and a fellow rival to Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

While a supporting character in the comics, Steve’s function in Superman will likely be to serve as someone who will offer a counterpoint to Clark and Lois. Gunn has teased that there will be an exploration of the Daily Planet in this incarnation, and given how Steve has never been explored in depth through past Superman media, the movie will be a way to do it. Whether or not other Daily Planet characters are joining the Superman cast, like Cat Grant and Ron Troupe, remains to be seen.

With filming set to wrap in the coming months, it might mean that DC Studios will be closer to having a Superman trailer ready for the world. Whether that ends up being sometime in the fall or early next year remains to be seen, as post-production will still need to be done on the film. But for now, time will tell when the DC Universe audience will get another look at the Superman film.
