The boy died at Bidder’s Pond in Mitcham Common, south London

An investigation has been launched into the death of a teenager who was found dead in south London pond.

The boy, whose identity has not yet been released, was recovered from Bidder’s Pond, a mid-size pond in a quiet part of Mitcham Common on Wednesday evening.

Emergency services were called but he was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

The Metropolitan Police said his death is ‘currently being treated as unexpected’.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ‘We were called 6.39pm on Wednesday 3 July to reports of an incident at the junction of Commonside East and Watneys Road, Mitcham.

‘We sent resources to the scene, including members of our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and an incident response officer.

‘Sadly, a patient died at the scene and was taken to hospital by a third party.’
