Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Terrifier 3!Director Damien Leone talks about the big revelation in Terrifier 3 that connects Art the Clown with Sienna Shaw. The latest installment in the horror franchise picks up five years after the events of its predecessor, with Sienna’s desire to have a peaceful Christmas with her extended family becomes a bloody nightmare as Art and Vicky return. It’s ultimately revealed in Terrifier 3 that the reason Art keeps coming after Sienna is that she is an angel meant to counter the demonic nature of the killer clown.
In an interview with USA Today, Leone explained that the revelation of Art and Sienna’s connection is exactly what viewers “need to know” at this point of the story, especially “in regard to the supernatural aspect.” Leone also went on to address critiques that the Terrifier franchise “has no plot“, inviting viewers to be patient as he doles out new information accordingly with each new installment. Check out what Leone said below:
That gives you every bit of information in this franchise basically that you need to know, certainly in regard to the supernatural aspect. I still see people saying they don’t know what’s going on. It just comes down to they need to know exactly who and why Art the Clown was a serial killer in the first place, and I think till I give that piece of information out, I’m going to constantly get hit with “This movie has no plot.”
It’s Not As Random As It Seems
While Terrifier 3 seems to be about gore and how brutal Art the Clown can be on the surface, Leone’s comment suggests that the film is part of a puzzle piece in the franchise that’s building up to a big revelation in terms of Art the Clown’s killer origin. The kills in the film are certainly meant to be shocking and test the audiences’ tolerance for the creative violence, it also seems likely to be intentional with hidden clues that might help build up to the revelation, given that they are part of Art’s signature.
Leone’s comment furthers confirms that Terrifier is going to be a puzzle franchise, which incorporates a storytelling method that places different pieces of information at different points in the story, leading up to a complete picture at the end of the franchise. A similar method is also used to explain Sienna’s connection with Art the Clown at the end of Terrifier 3.
Art the Clown Steals the Show From Sienna
Sienna Shaw as a protagonist might not be enough to lead the franchise, whereas Art the Clown has endless potential. By shifting focus from Sienna to Art the Clown, Terrifier has found a viable way to move forward. Since Terrifier 3′s release, some fans have voiced their concerns about the future of the franchise, especially with Sienna not giving out a lead star vibe.
