From buying own-brand products to yellow label produce, there are numerous ways we can reduce the cost of our weekly food shop.
But savvy supermarket-goers have reminded people there’s an easy way to nab pricey items that cost as much as £8 or £10 for free, when at the likes of Tesco.
Social media users are urging shoppers to always scan their Clubcard at the checkout – and then pay close attention to their receipts. This is because the receipt may come with vouchers entitling you to freebies.
Taking to the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group, a user named Rose Hargeaves shared that she recently received a voucher for a free box of Bold Platinum Cherry Blossom & Rose Water 2-in-1 capsules after paying for her shop.
The laundry product costs almost £8 full price, but the voucher said that the capsules were completely free during a certain time period as long as she used her Clubcard when buying them.
She claimed she received the voucher after completing a shop at a supermarket self-service till, however some people said that the vouchers weren’t guaranteed and that they are given out at ‘random’.
Others shared they had never received any printed vouchers, but had similar ones available to use on their Tesco Clubcard app, so it’s worth double-checking on there as well after a grocery shop.
It’s not just Bold products that you can nab for free, as these vouchers can be for all sorts of things, according to fellow Tesco shoppers.
‘A lady next to me got [a voucher] for Ariel,’ Rose added, while Cheryl Airzee replied: ‘I’m loving these vouchers. So far I’ve had a free bottle of Fairy Laundry, Lenor Scent Boosters, three packs of sanitary towels, some Airwick refillable pod things and a dust trap thingy for blinds.’
Similarly, a mum named Chloe Hopkins recently shared that she had nabbed a £10 pack of Pampers pull-ups for nothing, posting: ‘Free pack of pulls ups when you scan your Clubcard at Tesco. (Voucher comes out with receipt). Llanelli Tesco but I believe this is across all stores.’
However, some pointed out that it’s important to read the full receipt before you try and claim your freebies, as there are often terms and conditions that apply — and where you shop makes a difference.
Coral Blackwell warned: ‘Have seen some posts about getting vouchers for Fairy, Ariel, etc. Great! On the voucher it says FREE with Clubcard, or so much off with Clubcard. BUT… it’s only fully free with Clubcard in the MAIN BIG STORES. It’s the reduced price even with Clubcard at the smaller Express stores. So I got £5 off in my small store, which meant this 840ml Ariel Washing Liquid Gel was £1.75 in total. Still a bargain of course!! Just letting people know as didn’t read the whole receipt!’
If you’re not a regular Tesco shopper, don’t panic, as these types of vouchers don’t only apply there. Customers at Sainsbury’s say they’ve been given similar rewards after shopping with Nectar cards.
And you can also get more money-off coupons at Lidl, as the budget retailer made a big change to its loyalty scheme this summer.
The supermarket already gives shoppers regular personalised coupons based on their regular purchasing, and now offers weekly discounts for members on a selection of items too, with a range of discounts that change each week.
