In Dragon’s Dogma 2, you wield the power to craft your own chaotic personal narratives. Each player’s journey is unique, shaped by your decisions and interactions within the game world. For me, those early hours were defined by the presence of my friend’s pawns within my party, adding an extra layer of unpredictability and camaraderie to the experience.
Meeting Saylem, My Pawn
The first moments of Dragon’s Dogma 2 thrust me into a whirlwind of chaos, uncertainty, and unexpected camaraderie. As Serenity, the Arisen, my journey began with a disorienting twist of fate. Once a regal figure, I found myself reduced to the status of a mere pawn—a being lacking the will and autonomy that defined humanity. Alongside me stood Saylem, a manifestation of my innermost desires—a stalwart guardian with dark skin and a muscular physique, embodying strength and protection in a world fraught with danger.
Stripped of my former glory, I stood bewildered, grappling with the sudden loss of identity and purpose. But amidst the confusion, Saylem remained steadfast—a beacon of hope in the darkness. With his straightforward demeanor and unwavering loyalty, he became my guiding light in the face of uncertainty.

Together, Saylem and I embarked on a quest for redemption, seeking to reclaim what was lost and forge a new destiny in the fires of adversity. And though the path ahead was fraught with peril, we faced it with determination, united in purpose and bound by the unbreakable ties of companionship.
We Join Rain And Kano, My Friend’s Pawns
The real chaos began when my friends’ Pawns Rain and Kano joined our party. Rain, a snarky archer of the Beastren race, questioned my every move with a mixture of humor and frustration. In particular, he noted the lack of female characters in our party and poked fun at my choice of companions. When I stood still for too long within the game, he would ask if I was lost or needed assistance. When I dismissed him from the party to obtain an updated version of him that my friend had uploaded, he pretty much told me that seeing me again would be an “ill-fated experience.”
Despite Kano’s physical prowess, his role went far beyond that. Not only was he buff, but he also embodied a silent determination that drove us forward. During the long walks around the game’s big map, Saylem and Rain made banter, with Saylem continually showing irk at Rain’s judgments of me. Kano only spoke when he knew the location of our next quest. Long, quick strides were his trademark when he knew exactly where we were going.

United by fate and a shared thirst for adventure, the four of us forged an unexpected alliance—a group of adventurers brought together by circumstance. Despite our contrasting personalities, we found harmony in our differences, each member contributing their own unique strengths to our collective journey. As we embarked on our quest, our interactions became a symphony of collaboration and camaraderie, each of us playing our part in navigating the challenges that lay ahead.
While I still yearned for the possibility of multiplayer integration, I couldn’t deny the unique immersion of the pawn system. In a way, our virtual companions felt more alive than ever before, enriching our journey in ways I hadn’t anticipated. With their support, we embraced the adventure that lay before us, ready to seize whatever opportunities and obstacles awaited us along the way.
Death By “Rain”
In the early stages of the game, Rain temporarily assumed the leadership role within our party. The game’s mechanics dictate that the pawn who has experienced a quest first imparts that knowledge when accompanying another player. Since my friend, who created Kano, hadn’t completed the quest, Rain took charge. However, this shift in leadership quickly revealed Rain’s less-than-ideal navigation skills.
Rain eagerly gestured to capture my attention multiple times, insisting he knew faster routes through the rugged terrain. Despite the limited visibility provided by our lanterns, I followed his lead. To my dismay, what appeared to be a small hill turned out to be the back of a lesser dragon. The sudden awakening of the dragon triggered a pulse of anxiety through my controller as it demanded a fight.
Unfortunately, it was early in the game, and we were underleveled, with our health depleted from previous encounters. Compounding the challenge, our maximum health was reduced due to lack of rest, a mechanic designed to compel players to manage their exploration carefully. Saylem and Kano attempted to draw the dragon’s attention by banging their shields, but they were quickly overwhelmed by its fiery breath.
To my dismay, the dragon turned Rain against me, exploiting his formidable combat skills to finish me off quickly. As the ‘game over’ screen appeared, I couldn’t help but laugh at the chaotic turn of events.
My time with Kano, Rain, and Saylem during those initial hours served as a fantastic preview of the nearly 70 hours I’d ultimately spend immersed in the game. It was a journey marked by chaos, frustration, frequent deaths, and countless moments of laughter.
