The Diplomat Season 2’s Cliffhanger Ending & What It Means For Season 3 Explained By Creator

The article contains spoilers for The Diplomat season 2.The Diplomat season 2 ending gets addressed by showrunner Debora Cahn. In its return to Netflix, with a fast-paced six-episode installment, the political drama wraps up the explosive conclusion that left the fate of key characters in doubt. It then turns its attention to the machinations in the White House that rope in Kate Wyler (Kerri Russell), introducing Allison Janney’s Vice President Grace Penn. Her appearance inadvertently leads to the death of President William Rayburn (Michael McKean) in The Diplomat season 2 finale. Rayburn dies after he’s informed by Kate’s husband, Hal (Rufus Sewell), that Penn had ties to a false attack.

In an interview with TheWrap, Cahn discussed why the ending was structured as a cliffhanger. Plus, with season 3 already confirmed, Cahn teases where the Emmy-nominated drama could go next:

We always want to start in a place where we’re asking a lot of questions that might be worth answering in another season. It’s all about people in leadership positions who are new to them and feeling kind of out of their depth, so as soon as anybody is sort of fixed in a role, we want to kind of shake up the snow globe and see what happens if there’s more on their plate or things are worse.

What The Diplomat Season 2’s Twist Ending Means For Season 3

The Key Relationships Are Impacted

The turbulent relationship between Wyler and Penn fuels The Diplomat‘s return. At first, Kate isn’t so fond of the VP. That changes for a time, with Kate becoming more vocally supportive of Grace. Then it continues to swing as the short season progresses and moves forward. It was always expected that Kate would take the VP job and the show made no secret of that, planting the seed early and watering it often.

The Diplomat Season 3: What Will The Next Season Be About?

While The Diplomat season 2’s cliffhanger ending raises all sorts of questions for season 3, some key details can already be speculated.

The Diplomat season 3 will now be more complicated, with Rayburn’s death and the fact that Hal could conceivably be to blame for it. At least in Kate’s eyes, that may be the case. It also makes Grace the U.S. President, with Kate by her side. Hence, the upcoming episodes further entrench Janney’s new character and open up another avenue of conflict between Kate and Hal.

Our Take On The Diplomat’s Season 3 Setup

It’s Quite Intriguing

With a cast of The Diplomat that also includes David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh, not to mention Cahn having experience working on other politically-adjacent dramas like Homeland and The West Wing, the Netflix hit took a surprising route to get its lead character to an expected destination. It’s stronger because of it, building on established relationships and jolting them forward.
