Dragon’s Dogma 2’s lack of handholding is part of the game’s core philosophy, and nowhere is this more apparent than in its quest design. The game expects the player to listen to the NPCs when they talk and make logical conclusions.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Players Are Calling Out This “Hilariously Bad” Stealth Quest
One player called it the worst quest they’ve ever done in a game.
The Heel of History quest is a prime example of this. The Arisen is tasked with finding clues regarding the whereabouts of a missing orphan. The details of the task are not explained. All you’re told is to ‘ask around’ for clues.
Start ‘The Heel Of History’
To start the quest, talk to Kendrick in the Slums, standing in front of the Gracious Hand. Donate gold or an item as alms for the poor; it doesn’t matter which. Kendrick will stop you before you leave and ask your aid in finding a lost orphan, Malcolm, who was being taken care of at the Gracious Hand.
Ask Around For Clues
To find Malcom, you’ll first need to ask around for clues. There are three children you’ll need to talk to in order to understand where Malcolm went. Luckily, all of them are in the Slums.
- Aimee: Aimee is a little girl with curly hair wearing green clothes. I found her in the main room in the Gracious Hand. She’ll tell you that Malcolm was planning to go down into the vaults.
- Harvey: Harvey is wearing a sleeveless green tunic. I found him playing in some hay directly opposite where Kendrick was standing. He’ll tell you that Malcolm has been really into exploring as of late.
- Rick: Rick is a boy with long black hair wearing a red top. I found him standing facing the ocean on a small hill just past the Gracious Hand. He’ll tell you that Malcolm has been picking through rubble recently.
NPCs in Dragon’s Dogma 2 don’t stay in one place. You might find the three children in different places than I did, but they’ll most likely remain in the Slums.
Go Into The Vault
After you tell Kendrick about what you heard from the orphans, he’ll lead you to the locked Vault Malcolm has likely vanished off into and remove the rubble so we can now venture inside.
Explore the vaults, and you’ll come across Malcolm hanging about a room with a lit lantern. A cutscene will play where Malcolm will tell the group about a secret room he found filled to the brim with books.
Open the chest in the room where you find Malcolm to find a Ring of Conservation.
Follow him to locate the Archive. Kendrick will ask both you and Malcolm to hide the existence of the Archive. He’ll also ask you to find a ‘person of knowledge,’ someone who can appreciate the collection.
The person Kendrick is referring to is the Magistrate Waldhar, an imprisoned character you’ll meet during the course of the main quest, ‘The Caged Magistrate.’ Waldhar will only escape jail if you tell him about the location of this Vault.
If you’ve already undertaken this quest, return to Waldhar in the Gaol and tell him about the Vault. This will encourage Waldhar to leave and find the Vault, completing the quest. This also unlocks a follow-up quest called ‘A Magisterial Amenity’. Visit Waldhar after a few days have gone by to trigger it.
Like The Heel of History, other quests in DD2 can also be a bit confusing when they don’t mention what needs to be done. If you’re stuck, you might find our phantom oxcart and a beggar’s tale quest guides a helpful read.
