Whether it’s milk, jam or a gone-off pot of leftovers, they say you can tell a lot about a person based on what’s in their fridge.
But if you thought that they were literally just for storing food, you might be mistaken – because the internet has decided that now, fridges aren’t just a practical (and necessary) part of food preparation, but an opportunity to get creative and decorate.
No, not the outside of the door with a few magnets – inside.
Ever heard of a little something called ‘fridgescaping?’ It’s just what it sounds like: curating your fridge interior so that it looks aesthetically pleasing (beyond stacking your plastic tubs nice and neatly), and it’s seen TikTokers spice it up in there using everything from flowers to framed photographs.
Notably, TikToker @stephaniehannablog shared pictures as she eagerly filled her fridge with Halloween décor – featuring plastic spiders, fake cobwebs, and even glitterballs in place of anything culinary-related.
Elsewhere, @chantalarntsen’s was comprised of a fancy butter dish, ornate ceramic vases and even gold-framed pictures of her cat – just like something out of Bridgerton.
So, why might people do this, and what are the benefits? As @lynziliving noted in one TikTok video, it helps her ‘keep better track’ of her produce and encourages her to ‘try new foods.’ It also means she now cooks ‘more than ever’ and has less food waste.
However, advising those who want to start ‘fridgescaping,’ she believes it’s best to ‘start small.’
‘It’s easy to go all in and go overboard immediately…however, this won’t work for everyone,’ she notes.
‘You may decide it’s inconvenient or you don’t eat your produce fast enough. Some simple and easy starters are a butter dish, egg crate and some simple bud vases with edible or food safe flowers.’
Naturally though, much of the internet has a lot of questions – mainly about the practicality of such a hobby, and how feasible it is to make your fridge look pretty.
‘I have come across the fridgescaping trend and I just,’ @taylorsschumann penned on X, formerly Twitter. ‘Babe what’s wrong you’ve hardly looked at your framed horse portrait in the fridge.’
‘As a single woman with plenty of fridge space this is a hard pass for me,’ @tinyem316 added in the comments section, while @Researchfromtx noted that they couldn’t ‘imagine having so much space’ to hang framed photos in the fridge.
‘Now I need to get an area rug for my fridge,’ @theKirstinjoy joked, as @ElectricJoke argued that they’d ‘accidentally’ joined the trend in keeping fresh chives in a drinking glass ‘because I’m too lazy to throw them out before they’re really really dead.’
It wasn’t all doom and gloom though, as many were inspired to try it for themselves.
‘I’m mad that I don’t hate this,’ @Dnash11823093 admitted, while @abzspencer described it as ‘very pretty’ but ‘hard to maintain.’
‘That’s it. I’m putting my little art in my fridge,’ @Realwaterba chimed.
So, if you’re looking for a new hobby, ‘fridgescaping’ could be the way to go. Just make sure not to spill anything on your family photos.
