The Mandalorian Movie Footage Corrects A 2-Year-Old Star Wars Mistake

Footage of the upcoming Star Wars movie The Mandalorian & Grogu has already fixed one of the franchise’s mistakes from The Mandalorian‘s past. Lucasfilm shared footage of The Mandalorian & Grogu at D23, which Screen Rant was able to watch, and it had a few interesting details. Aside from simply providing a glimpse of the upcoming Star Wars movie, that footage also hinted at what the film’s story will be about. On top of that, it also proved that The Mandalorian & Grogu understands one of the mistakes of Star Wars‘ past, and is already set on correcting it.

Din Djarin and Grogu took a few missteps in their history, particularly after the ending of The Mandalorian season 2. Both The Mandalorian season 3 and The Book of Boba Fett made some mistakes with their story, like rushing their reunion and focusing too much on Bo-Katan Kryze and the planet Mandalore. The Mandalorian & Grogu has already promised to fix some of those mistakes, like through its increased focus on Din and Grogu. The footage of the Star Wars movie also indicated that it will address another major mistake made two years ago: Din’s replacement for the Razor Crest.

The N-1 Starfighter Never Made Sense For Din Djarin

Din Djarin’s original ship – the Razor Crest – was destroyed by Moff Gideon’s Imperial Remnants in The Mandalorian season 2. His transportation problem wouldn’t be fully solved until The Book of Boba Fett episode 5, but that solution presented a new problem. Din replaced the Razor Crest with an N-1 Starfighter, a small, single-passenger ship designed for combat. While the N-1 Starfighter did have a few modifications for Din’s needs, like a modified droid port that could hold Grogu comfortably in the back, it was also far too small to be a bounty hunter’s ship.

As A Contracted Bounty Hunter, Din Djarin Needed A Bigger Ship

The main problem with the N-1 Starfighter is that it was never designed to do most of the things a bounty hunter needed to be able to do. A starfighter with only enough room for a pilot would fail to do even the most basic task that makes someone a bounty hunter: transporting bounties. There was no cargo hold on the N-1, and nowhere to put prisoners, even those frozen in carbonite. It also didn’t have enough room for Din’s arsenal of weapons, meaning he would only have been able to use the guns he could carry on his person.

  Din Djarin was once a lone bounty who has since tasked himself with raising his adopted son and Mandalorian apprentice, Grogu. Born on Aq Vetina and raised on Concordia by the Mandalorian faction the Children of the Watch, Din is an orphan and Mandalorian foundling who has risked both his life and his Mandalorian Creed to protect Grogu. Djarin has become an important part of the galaxy’s fight against the Imperial Remnant that lingers in the wake of the Empire’s fall, as he is now working under-the-table for the fledgling New Republic’s rangers.

  Grogu is a former Jedi youngling who is now training as a Mandalorian apprentice under his adopted father, Din Djarin. A survivor of Order 66, Grogu was hunted by the Empire for his blood amidst their cloning experimentation. Rescued by Din after initially being his bounty, Grogu went on to be trained briefly by Luke Skywalker as a Jedi Padawan, but has ultimately chosen the path of the Mandalorians instead to remain with his father. Grogu is now traversing the galaxy with Din to fight the Imperial Remnant and learn the Mandalorian Way.

Those are the most basic aspects of bounty hunting, but the N-1 Starfighter also failed at the intricacies of the lifestyle as well. Tracking, finding, hunting, and transporting a bounty could take days at a time. The N-1 wouldn’t have been able to serve as temporary housing on such long assignments. Din would have either needed camping equipment the ship didn’t have room for, or he would have had to find lodging on every single hunt. He also would have had to raise Grogu in its cramped quarters, proving it was far too small to be constantly traveling in.

The Razor Crest Is The Only Ship Suitable For Din Djarin

The N-1 Starfighter was a very bad fit for a bounty hunter, and it highlighted something that The Mandalorian & Grogu has picked up on: the Razor Crest is the best ship Din and Grogu could possibly have. The D23 footage of The Mandalorian & Grogu revealed that Din will be getting a new Razor Crest in the coming movie. Giving Din and Grogu a new Razor Crest is the perfect way to solve the problems the N-1 presented, and it’s a move that brings back one of the most underrated tools in their bounty hunting arsenal.

Unlike the N-1, the Razor Crest is plenty big enough for anything bounty hunting could throw at Din and Grogu. The Razor Crest was essentially Din’s hub as a bounty hunter: it had plenty of room for them to live and sleep in while out on jobs, it could carry multiple prisoners frozen in carbonite while also having room for willing passengers, and Din could manage his weapons, armor, and equipment there. It also had enough room for Grogu to grow up and even take his IG-12 armor with him. The Razor Crest is the perfect ship for both Din and Grogu to continue their story.

The return of the Razor Crest is a course-correction for The Mandalorian & Grogu, and not just in practical ways. The N-1 and its size seemed to be an indication that Din and Grogu were going to move away from bounty hunting and start being more connected to Mandalore and the New Republic after the ending of The Mandalorian season 3. Bringing back the Razor Crest, however, is a sign that The Mandalorian & Grogu is returning to its roots and the things that made the original show so popular in the first place.
