A prolific shoplifter who failed to make a crisp getaway told police officers that ‘once you pop, you can’t stop’ after getting arrested.

Adam Spencer, 40, went on a big shopping spree in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, before being apprehended by officers on Tuesday.

Spencer admitted to grabbing 17 tins of in the raid, quoting the tubed snacks slogan ‘once you pop, you can’t stop’ in his confession.

The shoplifter was sentenced to a six-month prison term, suspended for a year, pay £200 in compensation and complete a six-month drug rehabilitation requirement programme at Nottingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The series of thefts spanned from April 11 – 17, starting off at Tesco on Alfreton Road before moving onto Asda on Priestic Road.

Spencer also broke in through the back door of an Iceland, stealing various meat products on May 2.

After a hasty getaway, he returned two hours later, making off with over £300 worth of stock.

He returned to the very same supermarket on May 19 for yet another theft.

PC Dean Fenton, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: ‘The actions of prolific thieves like Spencer can have a really negative impact on communities who don’t want to see their stores targeted again and again.

‘Shoplifting isn’t a victimless crime. These offences hurt businesses, affect people’s livelihoods and can ultimately result in shoppers having to pay more for items as prices go up as a result.

‘Burglary is also a very serious offence so we were pleased to be able to link Spencer to the two he was involved in, as well as the shop thefts, and put him before the courts.’
