This Cult Slasher Franchise Being Rebooted After 11 Years Is Great News For Horror Fans

The Wolf Creek franchise is getting a long-anticipated reboot movie, which is fantastic news for the cult fan base of this unconventional slasher series. Created by writer-director Greg McLean, this franchise began in 2005 with the original Wolf Creek. Set in the Australian outback, the plot revolves around three unsuspecting backpackers who get hunted and captured by a sadistic, xenophobic serial killer named Mick Taylor, played by John Jarratt. The script was inspired by the real-life murders of backpackers committed by Ivan Milat in the ‘90s and Bradley Murdoch in 2001.

In 2013, McLean directed a sequel, simply titled Wolf Creek 2, which saw Mick kidnapping and torturing a British tourist and a young German couple traveling in the outback. In 2016, the Wolf Creek franchise was revived as a web series on the Australian streaming service Stan. Jarratt again reprised his role as Mick and the show ran for two seasons. Now, a third Wolf Creek film is in development (via Deadline) and it’s about time this franchise made a comeback.

Wolf Creek Is Being Rebooted 11 Years After The Last Movie

John Jarratt will reprise his terrifying role as Mick Taylor

More than a decade after the last Wolf Creek film was released, the franchise is getting its long-awaited threequel. McLean is back on board as a producer and Jarratt will reprise his iconic role as Mick in the new movie, which is titled Wolf Creek: Legacy. Sean Lahiff, who edited Wolf Creek 2, has been promoted to director for the threequel. Resident Evil’s Jeremy Bolt and The Babadook’s Kristian Moliere will produce the film, which is working from a screenplay by Duncan Samarasinghe.

In Wolf Creek: Legacy, Mick will target a family of American tourists who are traveling across the outback. After the parents sacrifice themselves to save their children, the kids will then find themselves alone and afraid, being mercilessly hunted by a madman. This threequel will bring an age divide angle to the story, pitting two resourceful Gen Z kids against an aging killer who might be slowing down. It’ll be interesting to see where this new story goes.

Why A Third Wolf Creek Movie Happening Is Exciting

Wolf Creek is totally unique in the slasher landscape

It’s particularly exciting that the Wolf Creek series is getting a new entry, because this isn’t just a typical slasher franchise. After a few sequels, slasher franchises like Halloween and Friday the 13th became interchangeable, with each film consisting of a mindless string of murders. But Wolf Creek is smarter than that; it’s a slasher take on Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game,” in which the slasher’s victims have a chance to outwit him and escape his wrath.
