Thomas Tuchel has reached an agreement to become England’s new manager, according to reports.

The Football Association has held advanced talks with the 51-year-old to permanently succeed Gareth Southgate, who left the role after England’s Euro 2024 campaign in the summer.

And according to The Times, Tuchel has now agreed a deal with the FA with an unveiling expected this week.

Tuchel had also held talks with Manchester United in the summer to potentially replace Erik ten Hag before the Premier League side opted to keep the Dutchman in place.

Since United’s approach, the FA held extensive negotiations with Tuchel having appointed Lee Carsley as interim manager for England’s six Nations League matches across September, October and November.

Tuchel has won league titles with both Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, while he won the Champions League during his time at Chelsea.

The German has been out of work since leaving Bayern at the end of last season.

England captain Harry Kane, who played under Tuchel at Bayern last season, was asked by Sky Germany earlier on Tuesday for his verdict on the FA’s move for his former manager.

‘To be honest, I haven’t heard anything specific about it yet. That’s why I can’t really comment on it until it’s officially announced,’ Kane said.

‘We’ll have to wait and see what happens. I obviously know Thomas very well from the last year.

‘He’s a fantastic coach and a fantastic person. I’m sure the FA will contact me when they know more about this issue.’

Tuchel will become the third overseas coach to manage England after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Speaking after England’s 3-1 win over Finland in Helsinki on Sunday, Carsley stressed that the FA needed to appoint a ‘world-class coach’ as Southgate’s permanent successor.

‘My bosses have made it totally clear what they need from me,’ Carsley said.

‘This job deserves a world-class coach who has won trophies and been there and done it. I’m still on the path to doing that.’

The FA had also mad an informal approach for Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola before their agreement with Tuchel.

However, the Catalan has yet to decide his future with his current contract at City due to expire at the end of the season.
