An incredible new teaser for Star Wars: The Acolyte reveals that Star Wars’ next TV show will explore a brand-new dark side mystery. The Acolyte is the newest addition to Star Wars movies and TV shows, set 100 years before the prequel trilogy in the Star Wars timeline. With this time period comes the opportunity to uncover secrets never before revealed in Star Wars, and one such secret seems to be front-and-center.

The teaser, posted on The Acolyte’s X account, OfficialAcolyte, depicts the Jedi facing off against a masked figure wielding a red lightsaber in addition to clips of the presumed antagonist, Mae, fighting Master Indara. Highlighting that uncovering the source of this darkness will be at the forefront of The Acolyte, the teaser ends with the question, “What are you?”

This teaser, in addition to The Acolyte’s other trailers, heavily suggests that the Sith may shockingly emerge after centuries of living in the shadows.

The upcoming Star Wars show The Acolyte will take the franchise into the grand High Republic era, but what mysteries await in the Jedi’s golden age?

How Much Will The Jedi Learn About The Sith?

Two of the most pressing questions audiences have leading up to The Acolyte are the degree to which the Sith will be involved and how much the Jedi will uncover about the Sith. Many viewers were surprised when trailers for The Acolyte showed red lightsabers, as Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace made it clear that the Jedi Council believed the Sith had been extinct for a millennium. In light of that, some were concerned that these red lightsabers (and the Sith) could mean a Phantom Menace retcon.

However, there are many reasons the Jedi of the prequel trilogy could have believed the Sith were extinct even if the Sith are the cause of the growing darkness shown in The Acolyte teaser. For one, even if the Sith are behind the Jedi murders, the Jedi may not discover that fact. After all, the Jedi are shown coming face-to-face with Mae in the trailers, but it isn’t clear whether she herself is a Sith. If Mae is a dark side Force-user but isn’t a Sith (yet or at all), then the Jedi may not uncover a deeper Sith plot.

Of course, that is just one explanation for the seeming disconnect between the events of The Acolyte’s trailers and the perceptions of the prequel trilogy’s Jedi Order. Darker possibilities, like all the Jedi who discover the truth being killed or Jedi such as Yoda intentionally concealing the truth about the Sith from the other Jedi, could also explain this contradiction without it meaning a retcon. In fact, rather than a retcon, The Acolyte is likely to finally explain why the Jedi believed the Sith to be gone while they were working in the shadows (Palpatine being just one example).

As this teaser for The Acolyte makes clear, Star Wars’ newest show is sure to be a thrilling exploration of the secrets of the Sith during the High Republic Era. However, it remains to be seen whether the Jedi themselves will uncover these mysteries. Either way, the wait is nearly over for Star Wars: The Acolyte, which will undoubtedly mean incredible updates for Star Wars.
