Creative Assembly is supposedly working on a Total War game set in the Star Wars universe, which is one of three new games in development.
Total War might be best known as a historical strategy series, with entries spanning from 15th century Japan to the Napoleonic era, but it has tackled established IP too with the Total War: Warhammer trilogy.
The last entry was 2022’s critically acclaimed Total War: Warhammer 3, which landed a BAFTA nomination for Best British Game. Since then, developer Creative Assembly has reverted back to historical settings with last year’s Total War: Pharaoh.
While it’s surprising the series hasn’t tackled other IP’s outside of Warhammer, that might be about to change according to a new report.
As reported by DualShockers, Creative Assembly is said to be working on an officially licensed Star Wars version of Total War. It’s claimed this is one of three Total War games in development at the studio, but the others are not named.
It’s unclear how far along this Star Wars project might be, but the report estimates it could arrive ‘in the next couple of years’. For the most part, Total War titles have been released annually – with 2021 being the only outlier in recent years.
While there’s no details on this Star Wars project, this wouldn’t be the first time the series has been adapted into a strategy game. The best known examples are 2006’s Star Wars: Empire At War and Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, with the latter released shortly after Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.
This wouldn’t be the only Star Wars strategy game currently in development either. Earlier this year, developer Bit Reactor confirmed its unnamed Star Wars strategy title is still in the works following layoffs at EA.
If Creative Assembly are juggling three Total War titles, the recent layoffs at the studio might have impacted its release plans. The studio was previously affected by layoffs in 2023 too, following the cancellation of online shooter Hyenas.
However, Total War games do come in various scales, from full fat versions like Warhammer to the mid-budget Pharoah, and the Total War Saga line of what are essentially standalone expansions.
