EastEnders fans were over the moon (pun definitely intended) watching last night’s episode of the BBC One soap as Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) and Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) finally got back together.
The two characters have grown closer in recent weeks after Alfie discovered son Tommy (Sonny Kendall) had been abusing Kat.
Alfie then became a pillar of support for the character, regularly ensuring he was around to keep Kat safe.
A couple of days ago, the parents had a meeting with Tommy and their social worker about his progress. The session was difficult, but it ended on a somewhat positive note when Alfie managed to get through to Tommy.
As a result, Kat showed her gratitude by kissing Alfie – a move that changed the dynamic between them completely.
Yesterday, Kat made her way to the Slaters to update Stacey (Lacey Turner) and Jean (Gillian Wright) on her situation. Over glasses of wine, the trio discussed Kat’s situation and the pros and cons surrounding being in a relationship with Alfie.
Meanwhile, at the flat, Alfie was also discussing his feelings for Kat, but over some beer with Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) and Freddie (Bobby Brazier).
Once top-advice giver Ian reminded Alfie that Kat slept with Derek Branning (don’t), Freddie decided they shouldn’t focus on the past and attempted to banish their negativity by meditating…we think.
Just as Freddie asked Alfie who the love of his life is, a picture of him and Nana Moon fell from the shelf behind him. Believing it was a sign, Alfie concluded that he would be honest with his feelings.
However, as the night continued, Kat returned to the flat and discovered Alfie had laid the table for a dinner. The situation seemed awkward and once Alfie picked up on Kat’s distant behaviour, he quickly jumped in and said they shouldn’t get back together.
Concluding their kiss felt wrong, Alfie and Kat were given a distraction as a result of a towel catching on fire.
Kat grabbed the fire extinguisher and put the flames out, but then smirked as she turned to Alfie and sprayed him with the foam. A while later, Kat and Alfie stood at the window and watched the fireworks.
Staring at his beloved, Alfie told Kat that he’s absolutely mad about her, prompting them to kiss.
Awww!
The heart-warming scenes prompted many fans of the soap to take to social media platform X and share their thoughts.
‘Childhood me is absolutely screaming theres nobody like Kat & Alfie #Eastenders’, one user said.
Another elated fan of #Kalfie said: ‘They always find their way back to each other.’
They certainly do.
Following Kat and Alfie reuniting, it has left us wondering if they will be the two characters at the centre of EastEnders 40th anniversary.
Kat and Alfie: A complex EastEnders love story
On-off EastEnders couple Kat Slater and Alfie Moon have a long and complicated history, which began when they were part of a will-they-won’t-they storyline while working behind the bar of the Queen Vic in 2002.
After finally getting together, they tied the knot on Christmas Day 2003, but were ripped apart a year later by Kat’s jealous ex, gangster Andy Hunter (Michael Higgs), who threatened to kill Alfie unless Kat slept with him.
Realising their feelings for one another were still there, they gave their marriage another shot and left Walford for pastures new at the end of 2005.
Five years later, they made a bombshell comeback when it was revealed Kat had been having an affair with Alfie’s cousin Michael Moon (Steve John Shepherd) and was pregnant with his son.
They eventually reconciled, with Alfie agreeing to bring Tommy up as his own. However, they were heartbroken when their baby ‘died’ – before it was later revealed Ronnie Mitchell had actually swapped their baby with her son James, who had died from cot death.
After a joyous reunion with baby Tommy, the pair were torn apart again when Kat’s subsequent affair with Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman) was exposed.
But a reconciliation eventually followed – as did their twin sons Bert and Ernie – before Kat and Alfie swapped the Square for Spain in 2016 after winning big on the lottery.
Two years later, a broke Kat returned to Walford having split from Alfie again, after cheating on him. When he later followed home, the couple had a short-lived reunion before Alfie was revealed as the father of Kat’s cousin Hayley Slater’s (Katie Jarvis) baby daughter Cherry.
With their relationship in tatters, Alfie did a bunk from Walford in 2019 after scamming £50k out of Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), who Kat later went on to have an unlikely relationship with.
When Alfie returned to Albert Square again three years later, he sabotaged Kat’s wedding to Phil, but it wasn’t enough to split them up and they rescheduled their nuptials.
However, after Kat discovered Phil had cheated on her with Emma Harding (Patsy Kensit), the pair split and she moved in with Alfie.
Next February, the BBC soap will celebrate the milestone with a live broadcast that will see viewers able to vote on a storyline with the actors having to react to the outcome.
EastEnders bosses also teased that the plot would be ‘a love story’, with those involved still under wraps.
But could it be Kat and Alfie?
