Hallmark actress Mamie Laverock ‘shattered her body’ after falling five floors from a hospital balcony, her mother confirmed.
The 19-year-old, most known for her role in When Calls The Heart, was rushed in for treatment over a medical emergency last month, when her loved ones set up a GoFundMe page to help with costs.
She was transferred to a hospital in Vancouver where she ‘was escorted out of a secure unit of the hospital and taken up to a balcony walkway from which she fell five stories’.
The star ‘sustained life threatening injuries’ and was placed on life support, after undergoing ‘multiple extensive surgeries’.
In a new update on the fundraiser, her mother, Nicole, explained that she is surviving following multiple surgeries, but is still in ‘tremendous pain’.
‘Focusing now on Mamie’s surgery today. Her body has been shattered. She has undergone two 11 hour surgeries with two doctors working on her, a three hour surgery and another surgery today,’ the message read.
‘We have nothing but gratitude for the doctors and nurses who have been exemplary in her care since May 26.
‘Mamie is “doing well” comparatively to when she arrived. Doing well because she has survived these extensive surgeries. She is enduring tremendous pain and continues to not give up.
‘We can only hold onto the miracles of each day and continue to thank everyone for their prayers and marvel at the miracles of her story. Our daughter loves her life and loves her family and is fighting hard everyday.’
Mamie was initially rushed to hospital with a medical emergency weeks before the fall, with Nicole remaining by her side.
They had set up the GoFundMe soon after, with more than $36,000 CAD raised at the time of writing.
‘On Saturday May 11th, Nicole traveled to Winnipeg to help Mamie, who was having a medical emergency,’ the initial post on the page began. ‘Nicole was able to get there in time to save her life. Then got her to a hospital in Winnipeg.
‘Mamie has since been transferred to Hospital here in Vancouver. Her recovery is unclear at this time but she is alive and is showing signs of improvement.
‘We are trying to go every day to support her. Any contributions would help us be by her side. But this could be upwards of a month or more.’
They shared a follow-up, explaining that the teenager – who had been in ‘intensive treatment’ since being hospitalized – had suffered a further ordeal.
Nicole has since spoken to the Los Angeles Times, sharing her delight that so many people had rallied around her daughter.
Although she didn’t address Mamie’s injuries, she suggested that the family is considering legal action over the fall – which she insisted was not ‘intended’.
‘This is an absolute miracle and there will be accountability,’ she told the outlet. ‘All we care about is that Mamie can make a recovery and that she’s alive and that she’s fighting and that she’s strong.
‘It’s unbelievable that she’s with us.’
A spokesperson for Providence Health Care, which operates the hospital, told People Magazine they are unable to comment on patient-related matters due.
They added: ‘In cases related to patient safety, an internal critical incident review is conducted to determine exactly what happened and to make recommendations for improved patient safety.
‘Our hearts go out to the patient, family, and all affected by this event, and offer our best wishes for a full recovery.’
