A storied US Navy submarine that sunk during World War 2 eight decades ago has been discovered 3,000 below the surface of the ocean.
The USS Harder was found off of Luzon, an island in the Philippines, after it was last known to be traveling through the South China Sea off of the island.
It was commissioned on December 2, 1942 with Cmdr Samuel Dealey in charge. The USS Harder got lost on August 24, 1944, with 79 on board.
Its final resting place has finally been confirmed by the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC)’s Underwater Archaeological Branch, using data from Tim Taylor, who is CEO of Tiburon Subsea and theLost 52 Project.
‘Resting at a depth of more than 3,000 feet, the vessel sits upright on her keel relatively intact except for the depth-charge damage aft of the conning tower,’ stated the NHHC last Thursday.
Sunken submarines can be difficult to identify, making the feat all the more celebrated.
‘Harder was lost in the course of victory. We must not forget that victory has a price, as does freedom,’ stated NHHC Director Samuel J Cox
‘We are grateful that Lost 52 has given us the opportunity to once again honor the valor of the crew of the “Hit ‘em HARDER” submarine that sank the most Japanese warships – in particularly audacious attacks – under her legendary skipper, Cmdr Sam Dealey.’
The USS Harder is not the only submarine that has been that has been located by the team.
Lost 52 Project has found and helped memorialize 52 submarines that vanished during World War 2 and the Navy gave Taylor a Distinguished Public Service Award in 2021 for the efforts.
The project has scanned the entire USS Harder wreck and stitched images together to create a 4D photogrammetry model and used it to explore the site.
