An eight-year-old boy has died after eating strawberries at a school fundraiser.

The boy was found unresponsive in his home on Friday, with his parents telling police he ‘had eaten several strawberries from a high school fundraiser the night before’ at Madisonville North Hopkins High School in Kentucky.

They said they gave him benadryl after he began experiencing symptoms and soaked him in a bath.

But his symptoms continued to worsen, and he was taken to hospital around 10.30pm that night before he brought back home hours later.

He was found unresponsive when he parents tried to wake him up for school on Friday morning.

The Hopkins County Health Department said a preliminary autopsy report ruled that it was an ‘isolated allergic reaction’, reports FOX News.

Denise Beach, the Director for the Hopkins County Health Department, said: ‘Dr. Christopher Kiefer, Medical Examiner, said the incident involving strawberries looks like an isolated allergic reaction.

‘He relates that this is a preliminary report, so we still advise not eating the strawberries currently.’

The department has warned people not to eat the strawberries from the High School.
