Aston Villa’s dramatic draw against Liverpool on Monday means Tottenham have no choice but to beat Manchester City to stay in the top-four race – and that is good news for Arsenal’s hopes of landing the Premier League title.
Liverpool had a 3-1 lead at Villa Park up until the 85th minute in what was set to be a big boost for Arsenal before Unai Emery’s side scored two late goals.
A draw is still positive for Arsenal, though, as a Villa victory would have clinched them the fourth and final Champions League place – but they failed to pick up three points – which means Spurs are still alive in the battle for the top four.
Prior to Villa’s match against Liverpool, Arsenal hero Paul Merson suggested that if Spurs had nothing to play for against City, then they’d be inclined to purposely lose the match to stop their north London rivals from landing the top-flight title.
Following Villa’s 3-3 draw against Liverpool, Arsenal supporters have been reacting to the result on social media and what it means for their side on Tuesday when Spurs host their title rivals City.
Arsenal superfan Piers Morgan posted on X: ‘So, with that Villa draw, Spurs MUST beat City tomorrow night or they won’t have any chance of qualifying for the Champions League.
‘Perfect scenario for Arsenal to win the League. Come on [Tottenham] you can do this, you useless wastrels.’
What is the current state of play?
Arsenal sit top of the table on 86 points with one fixture left. They play Everton at the Emirates in their final match on Sunday.
Manchester City are on 85 points with two games left. They travel to Tottenham on Tuesday and finish the season at home to West Ham.
Fellow Arsenal supporter @hihbhu posted on Reddit: ‘More pressure on [Spurs] to win tomorrow now, they have an opening and it’s up to them to take it.
‘Villa have Palace and [Spurs] have Sheffield [United] after their game in hand tomorrow. They’ve got to do their best to win if they want their [Champions League] bonuses.’
‘Spurs can now no longer play for a draw tomorrow,’ Reddit user @farkoooooff added. ‘They’ll play to win – whether that works or not, we’ll see.’
‘I think if Villa had won I would’ve had completely 0 hope for Spurs to turn up tomorrow and even let them ship 5+ goals,’ @Nickoo33 posted on Reddit.
‘Now they have a reason to turn up and take the [Champions League] spot to the last day.’
Meanwhile, Arsenal star Kai Havertz says he will become the ‘biggest Tottenham fan ever’ on Tuesday night.
