The cost-of-living crisis isn’t coming to an end anytime soon – case and point, energy bills are being set to jump by 10% from tomorrow.
Annual gas and electricity bills will increase by £149 after the energy regulator Ofgem hiked the energy price cap.
But this winter might be harder for some. The government moved to means-test the winter fuel allowance, an annual payment of at least £200 for pensioners, meaning 10 million won’t receive it.
Those worried about bills don’t just have to rely on electric blankets and other hacks though – there are other government schemes.
One of those schemes is the Warm Home Discount.
So, what help does the scheme offer and who is eligible?
Here is what you need to know.
What is the Warm Home Discount?
The Warm Home Discount Scheme is a one-off £150 discount on your electricity bill, though it can also be used on your gas costs.
You don’t get it as a lump sum in your bank account. Rather, your provider automatically takes off your energy bill.
In other words, you don’t have to do a thing. If you’re on a low income in Scotland, you must contact your energy provider directly to apply.
The payment doesn’t impact other benefits, like the Cold Weather Payment or the Winter Fuel Payment.
Who is eligible for the warm home discount?
If you live in England or Wales, Gov.UK lists two criteria to meet to qualify for the warm home discount:
The scheme opens in October.
If you believe you are eligible but have yet to receive a letter, then it is essential that you contact the Warm Home Discount helpline by February 29 2024.
- Warm Home Discount helpline
- Telephone: 0800 107 8002
- Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm
It is worth noting the scheme is not available in Northern Ireland.
People who live in a park home, also known as a lodge, static home or leisure home, have to apply for the discount through Charsis, an administrator for grants.
Can I use it to pay my gas bill instead?
You might be able to instead if your supplier provides both your electricity and gas. Just reach out to them to check if you can.
What if I’m on a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go meter?
No need to worry – you’re still eligible.
Your electricity supplier will let you know how to cash in the warm home discount, which might come as a voucher you top up your meter with.
