What We Do In The Shadows Season 6 Update Reveals New Details About The Vampires’ Missing Roommate

New details have been revealed about What We Do in the Shadows season 6’s new roommate. The FX mockumentary show, which is based on the 2014 movie of the same name, follows Staten Island-based vampire roommates Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), and Nandor (Kayvan Novak), as well as Nandor’s human familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén). The upcoming What We Do in the Shadows season 6 will be the final season of the show, which originally premiered in 2019.

As part of the Entertainment Weekly Fall television preview, the publication spoke with showrunner Paul Simms about What We Do in the Shadows season 6. He offered insight into upcoming storylines, including Guillermo’s maturation as he finds an office job. His place will quickly be filled by a long-lost fifth roommate named Jerry, played by Saturday Night Live‘s Mike O’Brien. Simms revealed that Jerry was the vamprires’ “best friend who they all loved but they collectively forgot to wake him from his “super-slumber” and their reunion will “[reenergize] their goal of conquering the New World.” Read Simms’ full quote below:

Guillermo’s story this season is about him finally realizing he has to grow up [and will follow him moving out an getting an office job.] We finally meet the vampires’ fifth roommate, another vampire that was their best friend who they all loved. He went into a super-slumber and told them to wake him up on New Year’s Eve of 1996 and they forgot to. This season they finally remember, and they go down in the basement and wake him up. [Then he] reenergizes their goal of conquering the New World.

They also shared an exclusive image from the new season which depicts Laszlo, Nadja, Colin Robinson, and Guillermo huddled around a trash can fire. See it below:

What These New Story Details Mean For What We Do In The Shadows

Season 6 Is Taking Big Swings

There are quite a few elements of the new season that seem to be revealed by these new story details. This includes the fact that, even though the What We Do in the Shadows cast is receiving a major new addition and the story is making some big swings, the core vampire characters will still stay the same in at least one important way. Especially when it comes to the way that they treat Guillermo, the roommates are typically portrayed as self-absorbed, a character trait that is doubly underlined by the fact that they’ve forgotten their best friend for decades.

The roommates have ultimately become distracted from their mission…

It seems that the series’ endgame will ultimately be a throwback as well, returning to the original mission statement from season 1 of the vampire show. The roommates have ultimately become distracted from their mission of conquering the New World, with their motivations shifting over the years as they have attempted to raise the reborn Colin Robinson and open a vampire nightclub, among many other adventures. While it remains to be seen if they will be successful, their attempt will likely be the major throughline of the final season.

Our Take On The What We Do In The Shadows Season 6 Story

The Show Is Gearing Up For A Successful Finale

While What We Do in the Shadows is introducing a new major character, introducing the biggest rift between Gullermo and the vampires yet, and resurrecting an old storyline, it is concluding its run with its core cast of main characters intact. So far, consistency has been the show’s strong suit, with no season earning a Rotten Tomatoes score below 94% since the beginning. Thus, by maintaining that familiar center, the show should be able to land on its feet successfully, even if it takes some major, unexpected swerves as its approaches its series finale.
