Although Bobby Trey is not the main villain in Cross season 1, he plays a crucial role in helping the central serial killer execute his murderous plan. Despite being based on James Patterson’s Alex Cross books, Amazon Prime Video’s Cross significantly changes the original stories from its source material. It borrows a few characters from the original books and accurately portrays how the author describes the titular detective character. However, the more the series progresses, the more it becomes evident that it takes many creative liberties with its adaptation of Patterson’s works.

While Cross season 1 features a vast set of characters throughout its runtime, only a few play a significant role in the overarching mystery and drama. Throughout Cross‘ runtime, Bobby Trey even resorts to extreme methods and kills at least two individuals to ensure his powerful client gets away with his murders.

Why Bobby Trey Is Working With Ed Ramsey In Cross Season 1

Ed Ramsey Seems To Have Dirt On Him & Promises Him A Good Payday

Bobby Trey is portrayed as one of Ed Ramsey’s biggest allies in Cross season 1. He not only helps Ramsey execute his murders because the killer has dirt on him but also because he promises a hefty sum. To ensure Ramsey does not get caught, Bobby Trey keeps a close eye on all officers from the police department, especially Alex Cross. This gives Ed Ramsey a significant edge, allowing him to throw his caution to the wind while staying one step ahead of law enforcers.

Almost midway through the show’s runtime, Alex Cross and his team find enough evidence to investigate Ed Ramsey’s home. Fortunately for Ramsey, Bobby Trey carefully tracks Alex Cross’ every move and escorts Ramsey’s final victim, Shannon, out of the house to ensure Cross and his team do not rescue her. Bobby Trey even murders a woman who has a voice note to prove that Ed Ramsey killed Emir Goodspeed. During his immoral quests, Trey also ends up getting shot at by the police but still manages to survive and ultimately gets an intriguing offer from Kayla Craig.

Kayla Makes Him An Offer He Cannot Reject

After Ed Ramsey gets arrested in Cross season 1’s ending arc, Bobby Trey does not get the big payday the killer had promised him. Fortunately, for Bobby, Kayla Craig approaches him Cross season 1’s mid-credits scene, where she makes him an offer. Toward Cross season 1’s ending moments, the police department realizes that Ed Ramsey wants to be convicted for killing 11 people because he believes it will make him famous, allowing him to garner recognition as one of the most notorious serial killers in history.

Therefore, to ensure he does not get what he wants, Alex Cross and his fellow police officers burn Ed Ramsey’s scrapbook to bury all evidence surrounding his crimes and only charge him with Emir’s murder and Shannon’s attempted murder. However, this comes with a major challenge: the families of Ed Ramsey’s other victims expect answers, and the police force does not wish to keep them in the dark. Owing to this, Kayla Craig tries to convince Bobby Trey to confess to Ed Ramey’s other murders and present concrete information on at least six of his previous victims.

In return, Kayla promises him full immunity and only a 24-month sentence. Realizing that Alex Cross will eventually find evidence of his two murders, Bobby asks Kayla to get him the offer in writing and accepts it. Before Cross season 1 ends its run, Kayla Craig extends the deal by asking him to give her access to all the compromising information Ed Ramsey had on powerful people. When she offers him a hefty sum and assures him that there isn’t much he can do with the information alone, Bobby seems to accept her final deal.

Cross follows the titular Alex Cross, a detective and forensic psychologist particularly adept at understanding and analyzing the minds of killers and their victims. Cross uses this prowess to bring murderers to justice.
