Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction has been overturned in the New York Court of Appeals after it was determined that the judge in the trial had prejudiced the cinema mogul.
He had been serving a 23-year sentence in a New York prison following his conviction on charges of criminal sex act and rape in the third degree, with improper rulings.
The case against the 72-year-old Hollywood figure was a crucial part in kickstarting the #MeToo movement in 2017 which shed light on sexual assault, sexual harassment, and rape culture in the entertainment world.
The allegations, trial, and previous conviction brought a lot of scrutiny on those close to Weinstein, including his ex-wife Georgina Chapman.
But who is she, and what has she said about the allegations levied against Weinstein?
Who is Harvey Weinstein’s ex-wife Georgina Chapman?
Georgina Chapman is a co-founder of the fashion label Marchesa, famous for dressing some of Hollywood’s biggest names.
The 48-year-old was born in London and met her business partner Keren Craig at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, and they went into costume design together.
During this time, Georgina also acted and modelled, appearing in adverts as well as shows like Rosemary and Thyme.
She and Keren officially launched Marchesa in 2004 and in 2006, the label was one of the Vogue Fashion Fund’s top 10 finalists.
Chapman has also starred as a judge on the fashion TV show Project Runway since 2012.
She met Harvey Weinstein in 2004 after he divorced his first wife Eve Chilton.
The pair began dating soon after and were married in Connecticut in December 2007.
They lived in New York and Connecticut, splitting their time between the two locations.
Their first child, India Pearl, was born on 30 August 2010, and on April 11, 2013, they had a son, Dashiell Max Robert.
Everything changed for the couple when, in 2017, over 90 women came forward accusing Harvey of sexual misconduct, harassment, and abuse.
Georgina filed for divorce in October 2017, and Weinstein and Chapman reached a divorce settlement of between $15 million and $20 million with the process finalising in 2021.
In a statement announcing their split, she wrote: ‘My heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions. I have chosen to leave my husband. Caring for my young children is my first priority and I ask the media for privacy at this time.’
In a separate statement, Weinstein said: ‘Over the last week, there has been a lot of pain for my family that I take responsibility for. I sat down with my wife Georgina, who I love more than anything, and we discussed what was best for our family.
‘We discussed the possibility of a separation and I encouraged her to do what was in her heart. In the end, she made the decision to separate.
‘I understand, I love her and I love our children and hopefully, when I am better, I will be in their lives again. I support her decision, I am in counselling and perhaps, when I am better, we can rebuild.’
Georgina is now dating actor Adrien Brody after the couple were first linked in 2019.
Last week, she posted a heartfelt happy birthday message to The Pianist actor, 51, who also shares the same birthday with her.
Posting selfies of the two cuddled up, she wrote: ‘Happy birthday my darling twin…so happy to share this day with my best friend #twins #birthday #loveyou
What has she said about his convictions?
Harvey Weinstein’s estranged ex-wife has understandably shied away from publicity after the allegations about him surfaced.
In an interview with Vogue in 2018, she said it took her several days to process the information she’d received.
‘I was so humiliated and so broke that I didn’t think it was respectful to go out,’ she said.
‘I thought, “Who am I to be parading around with all of this going on?” It’s still so very, very raw. I was walking up the stairs the other day and I stopped; it was like all the air had been punched out of my lungs.’
She continued: ‘I have moments of rage, I have moments of confusion, I have moments of disbelief! And I have moments when I just cry for my children. What are their lives going to be? What are people going to say to them?
‘It’s like, they love their dad. They love him. I just can’t bear it for them.’
When asked if she was ever suspicious about his behaviour, she replied, “Absolutely not. Never.”
