This article contains discussions of suicide.

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Yellowjackets season 2.Yellowjackets season 2 answers questions surrounding Travis’ mysterious death in the show’s adult timeline. Travis is one of the handful of characters who survives the Yellowjackets’ plane crash and their 19 months in the wilderness. Despite this, viewers don’t see much of him as an adult. During Yellowjackets season 1’s present-day storyline, Natalie and Misty look for Travis after receiving anonymous notes with the strange symbol from their time in the wilderness. When they find him, Travis is dead, and it is ruled a suicide. However, Natalie doesn’t believe this to be the case.

Natalie and Travis develop romantic feelings for one another during their time stranded in the Canadian Rockies, and it’s obvious their bond continues after they’re rescued. Although Natalie hasn’t spoken to Travis in years, she’s clearly heartbroken to discover he’s dead. Both Natalie and Travis weather a lot of trauma together in the 1996 timeline, and the authorities likely see this as a contributing factor to his death. But while they believe his death is a suicide, Natalie is convinced it’s something else. And Yellowjackets season 2 confirms she’s right to question it.

Travis Accidentally Killed Himself In Yellowjackets

He Wanted To Get Close To Death & Have Lottie Lower Him

When Natalie and Misty find Travis, it appears he has hung himself using a crane. However, Yellowjackets season 2 reveals that he never intended to kill himself. During their reunion, Lottie tells Natalie that Travis was determined to confront the darkness within him. He planned to do this by getting as close as he could to death without actually dying. He intended to use the crane to hang himself until he was unconscious, then have himself lowered down with help from Lottie. Unfortunately, the buttons on the crane got stuck, so Lottie couldn’t actually lower him.

With
Yellowjackets
toeing the line between supernatural and trauma-based explanations, it’s just as possible Lottie is an unreliable witness.

Lottie’s recollection of that night proves Natalie is correct: Travis’ didn’t die by suicide. However, he was clearly facing inner demons, which could explain why only Natalie questioned the official report. And the circumstances of Travis’ death remain suspicious, as there’s no clear reason the crane stopped working. Lottie also sees a vision of Laura Lee right after Travis dies, which could mean the wilderness is involved. With Yellowjackets toeing the line between supernatural and trauma-based explanations, it’s just as possible Lottie is an unreliable witness.

How Lottie Was Involved In Travis’ Yellowjackets Death

She Witnessed Travis’ Death & Tried To Stop It

Lottie was present when Travis died in Yellowjackets, and her story raises questions about whether she’s being fully honest with Natalie in season 2. Travis seemingly went to Lottie with his problems, believing their past in the Canadian Rockies had returned to haunt him. Lottie followed Travis to the ranch where he worked, where he was surrounded by candles in the shape of the strange symbol from the wilderness. According to Lottie, Travis asked for help with his plan, and she agreed to enact it with him.

Yellowjackets Symbol Meaning: Theories & Why They’re Scared Of It

Yellowjackets has yet to reveal the origin or meaning of the mysterious symbol, leading to many theories about the icon and why it scares the girls.

Given that Lottie has a vision of a dead Laura Lee, it’s clear she’s just as traumatized as Travis in Yellowjackets’ adult timeline. One has to wonder whether her recollection of events is accurate, as the teen version of Lottie’s character does ruthless things in the name of the wilderness. The adult Lottie attributes more of her experiences to trauma, but ultimately, that could also make her an unreliable witness. It’s possible there’s more to Travis’ death than even Lottie herself realizes. Perhaps Yellowjackets season 3 will shed more light on it.

Why Natalie Didn’t Believe Travis Died By Suicide

She & Travis Made A Promise After The Yellowjackets Were Rescued

Yellowjackets season 2 proves Natalie right about Travis’ death, and there’s an understandable reason she refuses to believe he died by suicide. On the heels of the trauma they experienced in the Canadian Rockies, Natalie and Travis made a promise to one another: that they’d never take their own lives. Although the two of them aren’t speaking during the show’s 2021 timeline, Natalie reveals that they’ve supported each other through their darkest moments. Neither of them breaks their pact, and she doesn’t believe Travis ever would.

universe will never know it.

If Lottie’s story is true, then Natalie is right about that. The tragedy is that, after Yellowjackets season 2’s ending, it now appears that Travis and Natalie are dead at their own hands. Natalie’s death is made to look like an overdose, even though Misty is the one who accidentally injects her with phenobarbital. And Travis’ death remains ruled a suicide, even though Natalie uncovers the truth about it. The two of them keep their promise to each other, but the average person in the Yellowjackets universe will never know it.
