WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Dexter: Original Sin episode 1!
The Dexter prequel series Dexter: Original Sin features Patrick Gibson’s Dexter Morgan accomplishing his first kill and keeping a specific trophy to take home. Developed by New Blood creator Clyde Phillips, the prequel series chronicles a post-college Dexter as he embraces his “dark passenger” through the guidance and teachings of his adopted father, Harry. Dexter implements Harry’s code to satisfy his violent urges while making sure never to get caught.
After Michael C. Hall reprised his iconic role as the charismatic vigilante serial killer in 2021’s Dexter: New Blood, he returns as Dexter’s inner voice and narrator in the prequel series. The series takes place in Miami in 1991 as Dexter begins his career at Miami Metro PD. Dexter: Original Sin will likely cover a few anticipated kills that are already established in Dexter’s lore. Another upcoming Dexter series, Dexter: Resurrection, is expected to be released in the summer of 2025 with Hall also slated to return.

Dexter Doesn’t Start Keeping Blood Slides Until Killing Alex Timmons Several Years Later
He doesn’t keep Nurse Mary’s blood as a trophy
During the Dexter: Original Sin premiere, Dexter makes his first kill after discovering that Nurse Mary had been killing patients and tried to murder Harry, who was hospitalized for a heart attack. The prequel series recreates the scene from the original series in which Michael C. Hall’s Dexter kills Nurse Mary in her home. While Dexter’s trademark is taking samples of each of his victim’s blood and storing it on a blood slide, he notably does not do this in the Original Sin premiere.

Dexter: Original Sin Episode 1 Review – Michael C. Hall’s Return Saves A Bloody Mess Of A Prequel Premiere
The Dexter: Original Sin premiere may be overstuffed & uninsightful but it aptly sets up a killer leading duo in Gibson & Hall’s shared protagonist.
The original Dexter show reveals that he had already killed dozens of people before he started taking blood slides, which is congruent with the depiction of Nurse Mary in Original Sin. Dexter doesn’t actually start keeping blood slides until he kills Alex Timmons several years after making Nurse Mary his first kill. Timmons appeared in Dexter season 1, episode 6 “Return to Sender” and was one of Dexter’s first kills. Because of the time jump, it’s unlikely that Timmons will be depicted in Original Sin.
Dexter Keeping Nurse Mary’s Gold Earrings Sets Up A Bad Twist In Original Sin Season 1
Dexter may have already made his first rookie mistake
Dexter may have already made his first rookie mistake in Original Sin episode 1. Wanting to take a trophy for Nurse Mary being his first kill, he hangs onto her gold earrings and hides them in his room. He notes that keeping the earrings would turn out to be a huge mistake, so someone will likely find them later on in the series. It’s more than likely that Dexter will have to cover up his tracks to make sure he doesn’t get caught if someone does discover Nurse Mary’s earrings. This could also explain why he stopped taking trophies in Dexter: Original Sin until he started collecting the blood slides.
Dexter: Original Sin explores the origins of Dexter Morgan as he transitions from student to serial killer in 1991 Miami. Guided by his father, Dexter channels his dark urges through a moral code while starting a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
