Why Oceans 14 Probably Wont Be Called That Even If It Happens

Ocean’s 14 looks like it’s finally going to happen – just don’t expect it to have that title if George Clooney gets his way. After Clooney broke through with his role in ER, it took him a few years to ascend to movie stardom. After some notable fires like Batman & Robin, he found his stride with movies like Out of Sight and Three Kings. It was the Ocean’s movie franchise that cemented his A-list status, with Clooney’s Danny Ocean leading an all-star ensemble through three movies.

Steven Soderbergh helmed the Clooney era, with all three films being slick, stylish, and breezy pieces of entertainment. Clooney seemingly retired from Danny Ocean with Ocean’s 13 and skipped out on 2018’s Ocean’s 8, where Danny’s younger sister Debbie (Sandra Bullock) took over heisting duties. The series has both a prequel and sequel in development, and while Soderbergh almost certainly won’t be returning for the latter, Clooney and Brad Pitt seem eager to reunite for the upcoming Ocean’s 14.

The Ocean’s films were one of the most popular franchises of the 2000s, starting as a remake of a 1960s Sinatra classic & forming a new cast in 2018.

During a 2023 chat with UPROXX, Clooney confirmed that another sequel was in development, though when asked about Ocean’s 14 details, the actor stated, “Well … I don’t want to call it that… I mean, the idea is kind of like Going In Style.” While it might seem like the logical title, calling the next entry Ocean’s 14 isn’t ideal due to the passing of Bernie Mac and Carl Reiner since the previous sequel. Mac passed away shortly after the release of the third movie, which, according to Don Cheadle (via EW), nixed any plans for another follow-up.

We were talking about it, and then Bernie passed, and very quickly we were like, ‘No, we don’t want to do it,’

Reiner passed on in 2020, at the age of 98. Mac’s Catton and Reiner’s Bloom were beloved parts of the Ocean’s saga, and it would feel wrong for the next chapter to be called Ocean’s 14 without either character appearing. There’s also the Margot Robbie/Ryan Gosling 1960s-set Ocean’s prequel that is in development, with the two stars playing Danny and Debbie’s parents.

With Ocean’s 8 being the most recent installment and the prequel yet to even announce a title, Ocean’s 14 might need a distinctive title to avoid confusing audiences. It will still need to fit Ocean’s in there somewhere, but the comparisons to Going in Style suggest the story might be smaller scale than the previous Clooney/Pitt outings.

What “Ocean’s 14” Should Look Like Almost 20 Years After Ocean’s 13

It’s time for the Ocean siblings to reunite

Without Soderbergh and nearly 20 years having passed since Ocean’s 13, the big question is where will the next film find Danny Ocean? Debbie visited his grave in Ocean’s 8 – though it’s strongly implied he faked his death to hide from his numerous enemies. If Clooney returns for another film, it would make sense for Danny and Debbie to reunite, though she may have a hard time forgiving him for letting her think he was dead.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt are on board, but time will tell if Ocean’s 14 can lure back Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Sandra Bullock, and other key players.

The Going in Style description makes it sound like it will be the definitive last chapter for Danny and his gang, and will probably play on the ages of its leading men. Danny, Rusty (Brad Pitt) and the others are no longer in their primes, with the story likely centering on the idea of them still being good enough to pull off another big score before retirement. Clooney and Pitt are on board, but time will tell if Ocean’s 14 can lure back Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Sandra Bullock, and other key players.
