Summary
- The return of the Razor Crest in The Mandalorian & Grogu movie signals a shift and return to Din Djarin’s bounty-hunting adventures with his newly adopted son.
- The Razor Crest offers more space, firepower, and versatility for tracking Imperial warlords and more bounties compared to Din Djarin’s custom N-1 Starfighter (as cool as it was).
- The Razor Crest’s return is a good decision as it serves as a mobile home for Din Djarin and Grogu, reflecting their bond and signaling a return to form for their overall story.
New footage for The Mandalorian & Grogu has surprisingly revealed the return of the Razor Crest. The Razor Crest was the iconic ship Din Djarin flew in the first two seasons of The Mandalorian. However, it ultimately met its demise at the hands of the Imperial Remnant when Moff Gideon captured the powerful child Grogu. Now, it seems as though a brand-new Razor Crest will be making its return to the Star Wars galaxy, and there are some strong reasons why this is such a good idea.
As seen in The Mandalorian season 2, the Razor Crest was destroyed on the Jedi world of Tython during the Imperial Remnant’s attack and capture of Grogu. While the child was eventually saved, Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin was still without his classic ship, effectively forcing him to find some other means of transportation as seen in The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian season 3. As cool as Din’s custom N-1 Naboo Starfighter is, the confirmation from exclusive D23 footage that the Razor Crest will return in the upcoming Mandalorian & Grogu movie is a very exciting (and smart) decision.

Din Djarin Needs A Ship For Bounty Hunting
Where Would The Bounties Go On The N-1?
While impressive and a fantastic callback to the prequel era of Star Wars films, it’s important to address the drawbacks of Din Djarin’s N-1 Starfighter. Rather than being a bigger assault transport like the Razor Crest, the N-1 is essentially a single-man fighter, trading space and firepower for greater speed and maneuverability. While this worked for Din Djarin temporarily, the smaller space is a clear issue.
It’s also going to become an even bigger problem for the titular Mandalorian, especially with The Mandalorian season 3 ending with Din Djarin confirming that he’s going back to bounty hunting while training his newly adopted son Grogu as his apprentice, tracking down Imperial targets for the New Republic. However, bounty hunting would prove to be very hard to do piloting the N-1 as there’s hardly enough room for Djarin and Grogu as it is, especially if they have an astromech like R5 aboard. There would be nowhere for a captured bounty to go (even if Grogu was adorably sitting in Djarin’s lap).
The Razor Crest Is The Perfect Bounty Hunting Ship
It’s Big Enough To Hold Bounties (Warm or Cold)
In contrast, the Razor Crest had always been the perfect bounty-hunting ship. Big enough to hold multiple bounties at a time, the Razor Crest possesses some impressive firepower as well as some prime features perfect for hunting. This notably includes the miniature carbon-freezing chamber, allowing Djarin to freeze and transport more aggressive or dangerous marks with little issue.
The Razor Crest also serves as a better mobile home for himself and Grogu. As they travel the galaxy, one can imagine that Djarin will have a much easier time teaching and training Grogu aboard this new Razor Crest than he would if he were still flying the N-1. While it may not be as fast as the vintage Naboo starfighter, the Razor Crest is far more versatile now that Djarin is going back to bounty hunting with his adopted son.
Din Djarin Never Stopped Wanting A Razor Crest
He Was Pretty Insistent In The Book of Boba Fett
Personal preference also seems to have likely played a role behind Djarin’s decision to go back to flying a new Razor Crest. While he did seem to enjoy building and flying the N-1, Djarin had initially been insistent about wanting to get his hands on a new Razor Crest, as seen in The Book of Boba Fett season 1, episode 5. While the history of how Djarin got his hands on the original Razor Crest is unknown, one can imagine that Djarin might just want a replacement model for sentimental reasons (beyond the more practical advantages).
The original Razor Crest was likely viewed by Djarin as his home with a hyperdrive, one he likely wants to reclaim ahead of The Mandalorian & Grogu now that he’s returning to bounty hunting. It’s also where he spent the bulk of his time bonding with Grogu when they first met. If Han Solo and Chewbacca can view the Millennium Falcon as their home, it’s more than logical that other pilots in the Star Wars galaxy would see their various ships as their homes as well (including Din Djarin).
The Razor Crest’s Return Is A Good Thing For The Mandalorian
A Sign That Din Djarin Is Going Back To Basics
It’s also worth noting that everything arguably started going wrong for Din Djarin and his story after the Razor Crest’s destruction in The Mandalorian season 2. Not only did he lose Grogu right after and later chose to give him up to Luke Skywalker to be trained as a Jedi, but Djarin’s new ship and reunion with Grogu controversially happened outside their own show in The Book of Boba Fett. Likewise, all the time spent in the N-1 in The Mandalorian season 3 coincided with Djarin’s personal story largely taking a backseat in favor of the story of Mandalore and its reclamation from the Imperial Remnant.
Now, Din Djarin and Grogu are going back to basics with a return not only to bounty hunting, but also to the Razor Crest itself with a brand-new model. To that end, it’s a strong visual sign that Djarin’s story with Grogu will return to the forefront. Likewise, it will be interesting to see if this new Razor Crest will have any new features to aid in Djarin’s hunts for Imperial warlords. At any rate, the return of the Razor Crest in The Mandalorian & Grogu feels like a very good sign for the upcoming Star Wars movie.
