With What We Do In The Shadows set to say farewell to the Staten Island vampires in its final season, showrunner Paul Simms reveals that the season will send off its cast on a happy note. The television spin-off of Taika Waititi’s 2014 horror comedy focuses on a group of vampires and their long-suffering but loyal familiar, Guillermo. Season 5 finally gave Guillermo (Harvey Guillen) the vampire conversion he’d always dreamed of, though the transformation into an undead creature of the night was more than he could bear.
Ahead of What We Do In The Shadows season 6’s premiere, Screen Rant caught up with the cast and crew at New York Comic Con about what the final batch of episodes has for Staten Island’s undead residents. Simms stated that they chose to focus more on the comedy above a sad story, knowing viewers will be emotional about the ending already.
Because looking at the whole season, we set out to make a season that was not heavy or emotional. We definitely didn’t want to do something where it was like, “Okay, you’ve laughed for five seasons, and here in season six, you’re gonna cry because the show is over.”
Instead, season 6 continues with its mix of comedic and standalone episodes, but will still have a sense of finality that, while not overbearing, would give audiences a satisfying conclusion to the past five years of misadventures. Read Simms’ comment below:
We wanted it to be as funny as the other seasons, and have standalone episodes, and have some sense of an ending, but not beat people over the head with it. But I’m very satisfied.

One Old Friend Returns & Another Reawakens
While What We Do In The Shadows season 6 will end the Emmy-nominated comedy series, trailers have already highlighted that there is plenty of life left in its undead character. While the vampires return to their long-postponed task of conquering the once-new world, an old friend, Jerry (Michael Patrick O’Brien), returns. He is a beloved fellow vampire who was left behind to slumber for almost fifty years.

ensures it ends as a fun story while still being a fulfilling conclusion for its entire cast.
Meanwhile, Guillermo is moving on from his life as a familiar and into a career in the human world, pushing the entire What We Do In The Shadows cast to look back and figure out what they want with their respective lives. As such, while new challenges may be throwing Nandor and the vampires into all-new situations, there is also a sense of finality as the season prepares to send off the cast.
